Finding Balance in a Judgmental Society WHAT THE KING HOLIDAY IS: It is a day on - not a day off; a day of action, not apathy; a day of responding to community needs, not a day of rest and relaxation; It is a day to celebrate the life and the dream of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is a day to reaffirm the American ideals of freedom, justice and opportunity for all; A day for love, not hate; for understanding, not anger; for peace not war. It is a day for the family to share together, to reach out to relatives and friends and mend broken relationships; A day when the community rids itself of the barriers which divide it and comes together as one; A day when people of all races, religions, classes and stations in life, put aside their differences and join in a spirit of togetherness. It is a day for our nation to pay tribute to Dr. King, who awakened in us the best qualities of the American Spirit; A day for all nations to cease all violent actions, seeking non-violent solutions and demonstrate that peace is not just a dream, but a real possibility, if only for one day. If only for one day, each of us serves as “A Drum Major” for justice and peace, “then we will bring to life the inspiring vision of freedom” which Dr. King dreamed. THE PURPOSE OF THE Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday The purpose of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday has not changed. In 1983, when the U.S. Congress passed the bill establishing the first and only federal holiday honoring an African American; Dr. King, we, as a Race, as a nation, as a world, realized A DREAM! We can ill afford to forget such a great man- a man of God- who knew it was A New Day - A day to stop segregation laws, sub-standard housing, jobs and wages; a man who had A New Vision; he had A DREAM- remember? Some forty-five years later WE are experiencing A DREAM turned into reality. THE DREAM of the First ever elected Black President of the United States of America! He also told us we had to have A New Attitude; An attitude of non-violence, of self-help, of justice and opportunity; An attitude of loving, not hating; of unity, not division; of understanding, not anger; of peace, not war and of freedom for everyone! It is very clear why I MUST celebrate the life and the legacy of Dr. King and why YOU MUST celebrate The King Holiday. WE MUST Continue to “Nurture and perpetuate the legacy and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” If not, we will forget; and if we forget what Dr. King died for, forget THE DREAM, THE VISION, THE ATTITUDE, we leave the door open for the same injustices, same violence, same hate, same division, the same intolerance to happen again! |
